Notability ?

[edit]

It's nice having this detailed article here - but does the song warrant that. Is there anything particularly notable about it ?

Status of protagonist

[edit]

I've edited out "poor" in the lead and described the protagonist as the son in a farming family. The Mayor's attitude to the protagonist is motivated (so the protagonist thinks until the denouement at the end of the song) by his social superiority and ambitions for his daughter, not by the notion that the protagonist is poor. The fact that the protagonist's mother is described as someone who goes "visiting around", in addition to setting up the denouement, serves to suggest that the protagonist's family is not poor but rather a normal farming family observing what could be described as middle-class social virtues.
